The worldly renown series “The Big Bang Theory” of Chuck Lorre and Warner Bros. TV, is about to start its eighth season on 22nd September of this year.
With new season, came new contracts for the actors, and huge salary raises for the three main characters Kaley Cuoco (Penny), Jim Parsons (Sheldon Cooper) and Johnny Glecki (Leonard Hofstadter). The main threesome has negotiated together for the new contract, a $90 million dollars salary per year, this would be about $1 million per episode, and a raise on union rights for the series.
These amounts weren’t accomplished since the highest peak of the career of Charlie Sheen on the series Two and a Half Men; which was the person with a highest salary in history of television. He had a salary of $1.25 million per episode, which along the union rights, reached $2 millions per episode. Or the protagonists of the series Friends y Seinfeld which only in their last season, the main actors reached the sum of $1 million per episode.
In these contexts, the salary of the main actors seems obscene. The producer Chuck Lorre told E! News “Everyone should be successful and happy and rich. They’ve earned it. It’s a fantastic team. It’s their moment.”
He has a good point, besides, could we imagine TBBT with another cast? They make the show spark.
However, we wonder, what about the other part of the cast? Howard (Simon Helberg), Raj (Kunal Nayyar), Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) and Amy (Mayim Bialik),are a very important part of the cast and also are very loved by the audience. These have negotiated their contract, there were a lot of moments of real tension, especially with the salaries of Helberg y Nayyar, which both alleged that their characters were as much as important as the ones of the main actors, but after several discussions, they’ve ended up signing a new 3 years contract for $70 millions, a very reasonable number. Instead, Rauch and Bialik had agreed with contracts last year, much less lucrative, since both actresses arrived later at the series, and had signed as guest stars, they’ve started making episodes for $60.000 and actually has raised to $100.000 along this contract.
This leads to the conclusion that Warner Bros. TV would be making $1billionfor the series, which in itself is obscene. In this case the actors surely deserve to have these salaries.
Remember that also TBBT is the nº1 comedy series in the United States, the most seen shown in Canada, and as well around the world. The show itself is an award winner on the Emmy; and Jim Parsons won three times an Emmy and a Golden Globe… What would Sheldon Cooper say about Parsons salary?
